The Dirty Truth About Docs Who Don't Wash
"It’s a question no hospital patient should have to ask: “Hey, doc, did you wash your hands?”
But in an era of rising rates of drug-resistant infections and overburdened medical staffs, hygiene experts say the best-protected patients are those willing to take safety into their own hands — by asking health workers to wash theirs.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital staffer too busy, too distracted — or, sometimes, too arrogant — to wash up are the target of a growing movement aimed at cutting rates of hospital-acquired infections that kill nearly 100,000 people in the U.S. each year, according to federal estimates..."
Worms infect more poor Americans than thought -Reuters
"Roundworms may infect close to a quarter of inner city black children, tapeworms are the leading cause of seizures among U.S. Hispanics and other parasitic diseases associated with poor countries are also affecting Americans, a U.S. expert said on Tuesday....a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, presented in November, found that almost 14 percent of the U.S. population is infected with Toxocara roundworms...Urban playgrounds in the United States have recently been shown to be a particularly rich source of Toxocara eggs and inner-city children are at high risk of acquiring the infection," Hotez wrote, adding that this might be partly behind the rise in asthma cases in the country. Up to 23 percent of urban black children may be infected...We need to begin erasing these horrific health disparities," Hotez wrote in the paper, available online at www.plosntds.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000149
U.S. sets record in sexual disease cases -More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year — the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday.
"Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they think better and more intensive screening accounts for much of the increase, but added that chlamydia was not the only sexually transmitted disease on the rise.
Gonorrhea rates are jumping again after hitting a record low, and an increasing number of cases are caused by a "superbug" version resistant to common antibiotics.
Syphilis is rising, too. The rate of congenital syphilis — which can deform or kill babies — rose for the first time in 15 years.
"Hopefully we will not see this turn into a trend," said Dr. Khalil Ghanem, an infectious diseases specialist at Johns Hopkins University's School of medicine.
The CDC releases a report each year on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, three diseases caused by sexually transmitted bacteria.
...About three-quarters of women infected with chlamydia have no symptoms. Left untreated, the infection can spread and ultimately can lead to infertility. It's easily treated if caught early.
Health officials believe as many as 2.8 million new cases may actually be occurring each year, he added...."

The Fallacy of Spinal Surgery
The Fallacy of Spinal Surgery is based upon a widespread modern clinical deception involving false surgical concepts and applications.  The fallacy of spinal surgery has been well documented through medical research data carried out by Prof .A.Nachemson in NECK & BACK pain - The Scientific Evidence of Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment. His research demonstrably proves that spinal surgery is totally ineffective, despite the regrettable historical fact of it being carried out so pervasively. The reason for the prevalence of surgical failures which have bvrought untold misery to probably hundreds of thousands of patients around the world - some would call them guinea pigs - is due to the underlying false concepts and applications which attempt to address the symptoms and not the causes of a spinal condition; furthermore, so called surgical diagnosis is invariably clinically FALSE, based they are based upon MRI scans, instead of upon a dynamic physical examination.
Studies: Surgery No Better for Sciatica
"Two big government-funded studies on back surgery for painful herniated disks show no clear-cut reason to choose an operation over other treatment. The pain and physical function of the patients, who were suffering from a condition called sciatica, improved significantly after two years whether or not they had surgery.
"
Time heals aching back as well as surgery
"ABOUT THE STUDIES  More than 1,000 people were monitored during two government studies on spine surgery.  Welcome absence: No one in either study developed a rare but feared disabling condition called cauda equina syndrome, which should ease the minds of patients and surgeons, said Dr. Eugene Carragee of Stanford University Medical Center.
"Sometimes people with mild sciatica have elected to go ahead with the surgery in order to avoid a theoretical neurologic catastrophe," but now patients can avoid surgery with a realistic expectation that they'll feel better in a year or two, said Carragee, who was not involved in the research.

What's Toxic In Toyland -San Francisco's ban on toys like these has sparked a sharp debate about the dangers of plastic contaminants -Time-CNN 12/03/2006
"They line the nursery section children's toy stores like brightly colored candies: rubber duckies for bathtime, chewable rings for teething, soft-covered books for pawing and mouthing. Parents shopping for their babies can be forgiven if they assume that everything on those shelves is 100% child safe. So why did the city of San Francisco issue a ban last week on the sale of certain plastic toys aimed at children under 3? And why are activists warning holiday shoppers in the most alarming terms against buying them? "Sucking on some of these teethers and toys," says Rachel Gibson of Environment California, a nonprofit, "is like sucking on a toxic lollipop.""

Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach said full disclosure of the information about Ketek could have a chilling effect on the FDA's ability to be an independent and objective evaluator of drug safety and other issues.

Pesticides And Schools: A 'Tragic' Health Hazard
"Pesticides in schools are a pervasive, unnecessary health hazard, said Marc Lame, an entomologist and professor in Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs. "Over 80 percent of schools in America are applying pesticides on a regular basis, whether they have a pest problem or not," he said. "This is tragic not only because of the well-documented link between pesticides and health problems in children, such as asthma and neurological disorders, but also because pesticides generally do not work in a preventive manner in the school environment. Applying pesticides does not prevent pests from coming in, so using them when pests are not present does nothing other than expose children and staff to toxic chemicals.""
